  Back to case studies

A Solution for Xserve and OS X

Spring Studios is one of the foremost providers of fully managed photographic services in the UK. Spring needed to address the increasing server and storage requirements created by their growing digital photographic services.

Spring Studios were established in the late 90’s. Since then, the company has grown to become one of the foremost providers of fully managed photographic services in the UK. Spring now boasts an enviable client list; some of the world’s top photographers and many familiar high street retail companies use Spring’s growing facilities.

Spring provides the best facilities available so they can pamper their clients every need. The company provides for hire studios, all forms of photographic equipment and technical support to assist photographers with anything related to a shoot. Lighting advice and set up, set building and production services are also available. Along with make-up tables, ironing boards, catering, special client hospitality areas, Spring’s amenities are extensive. Spring’s philosophy is to provide all those involved in a shoot with the very best facilities available to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

About five years ago, Spring decided that new services were required to support photographers using digital photographic equipment. Today, Spring can supply full digital photographic productions facilities including, the latest Mac technology and a full range of Phase One camera backs. Whether in house or on location, Spring Studio’s customers have access to the very latest equipment and support services.

With digital photography very much in the ascendancy, technology to support this area of Springs business has become an integral part of its overall strategy and the company ensures it keeps abreast with technological advances. The very latest addition to the company’s systems is a new server and storage system.

Spring Digital’s manager, Nicole Duffy commented, “Over the last two years, there has been a huge increase in the amount of data moving over our network. On a daily basis, we regularly move anything up to about 600 GB. To help us manage this, we needed a complete system capable of handling and managing these very large amounts of data. Our basic criteria were that the system needed to be stable, very fast and capable of backing up and archiving large amounts of data extremely quickly.”

Spring contacted Rubicon Workflow Solutions to provide recommendations for a system that would meet their requirements and one that would be scalable to meet the ever growing number of customers using the service. In addition it needed to provide a platform on which Spring Studios could develop new services for their customers.

Following a consultation period, Rubicon Workflow Solutions made recommendation for a new system.

Paul Martin, Technical Director at Rubicon said, “Spring needed a system that would cope with the huge files and enormous amounts of data moved around their network. The networking and computer hardware was reasonably easy toidentify. We proposed an Apple Xserve G5attached to both a Gigabit (10/100/1000)local area network and a private 2GbitFibre SAN. The Xserve is able to access data from an Infortrend 3.5TB fibre Raid on the fibre SAN and distributes this to fifteen PowerMac G5 clients on the Gigabit ethernet network.

However, when it came to managing the data we needed a software solution that would manage data backup and archive very quickly and reliably. JPY had already contacted us about PresSTORE and we started to look at this as an alternative to the standard backup software used by the Mac community.

“a solution that delivers exactly what the customer needs and enables them to easily manage the backup and archive process without involving high levels of technical support”

Following tests on an in-house configuration, we recommended PresSTORE become an integral component of their system of the main Raid array. PresSTORE automatically manages full and incremental backups of data on the server configuration and this process is cycled between two tape pools to enable secure off-site storage of tape media. PresSTORE is also utilised to manage the archiving of completed jobs to tape and online storage. A really nice feature is that PresSTORE also supports barcode labeling, so when a specific job is requested by a customer, it is very simple and easy to identify the correct tape where a specific job is stored.

Paul continued, “Both we and our customer are extremely happy with PresSTORE. The customer finds the web browser user interface very simple and easy to use. They can access the archives and backups from any client machine on their network without contacting their systems administrator. This feature has also helped us. Rubicon provides an excellent support service to its customers and with the web browser interface, we are able to connect remotely to Spring’s system to ensure it is fully optimised and if they ever do have a problem, we are only a phone call away and can connect, diagnose and fix any problems very swiftly.
