Email headaches uncovered in usage survey
Press Release

Headaches then cured by revolutionary new product, MRX™.

JPY has recently surveyed almost 500 business email users to investigate people’s usage patterns in business. The survey unveiled a number of results that may not be surprising, but certainly reflect how email has changed our working patterns.

For example, 75 percent of respondents have a minimum of three email addresses, with 13.8 percent using ten or more addresses. Many people have decoy addresses to catch spammers, but many others use multiple addresses to manage and categorise incoming business mail. It demonstrated how email is becoming increasingly complex to manage.

The survey also showed a certain amount of mission creep, with work email finding it’s way into personal email accounts and vice versa. 59.6 percent of respondents send and receive business email from personal email accounts, and 72.9 percent of people use business email accounts to send an receive personal email.

As useful as email is, it is a poor player when it comes to knowledge management.  Over 60 percent of respondents had at needed access to information contained in an email on a colleague’s computer. However only 21.1 percent could easily access their email, while the majority would need to either resort to the IT department, or compromise security by contacting the colleague and getting them to divulge their password. Even so, 60 percent of people surveyed had privacy concerns about sharing access to their business email account.

JPY Managing Director, Dr John Yardley had this to say about the results.

“Email was once a considerable business advantage, but there is a real danger that it is becoming a liability. Without a robust strategy for managing the knowledge trapped in email, securing it, and using it for a business advantage, companies risk being held hostage by email. However, using a system like MRX assists companies to meet compliance requirements, while getting the full benefit of a knowledge management strategy.”

“MRX isn’t just about meeting legal requirements, it offers real and tangible benefits that eliminate the problems highlighted by our survey. It also does it in a non-intrusive way, allowing people to use email the same way as ever, while being organised automatically. It’s surely the most painless route to compliance, offering features that users will actually be pleased to have available.”
