1982-2007: Our Silver Jubilee

2007 is JPY's 25th Anniversary.

The roots of JPY date back to 1981, when the founder, John Yardley was a research scientist in the Speech Recognition Group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Teddington. NPL was one of the original pioneer establishments in computing and networking. John was also Chairman of a Real-Time specialist interest group which led to him being asked to assist a US software company called S&H, to distribute their TSX operating system in Europe. After completing his external PhD for his NPL work on Speech Recognition, John took up S&H's offer at the end of 1981, and left NPL to form JPY Associates Ltd at the start of 1982. The photograph above is our earliest recorded image, taken at the DEC User Show in 1985.

Specialising mainly in system software for the Digital PDP-11 and VAX range, JPY became involved with Apple Macintosh computers in 1987, developing and distributing products for networking. In 1990, JPY started their long and fruitful relationship with HELIOS and subsequently with Canto (2001) and Archiware (2004). In the meantime, JPY has developed a number of successful products in its own right. JPY's "spoofing" AppleTalk router designs were adopted by 3Com as part of their hugely successful OfficeConnect range.

Still led by John Yardley, JPY has maintained its commitment to leading-edge technologies in the area of networking, messaging and workflow. This tradition of innovation continues with the launch of Mail Robot X...

Mail Robot X Unleashed

Mail Robot X, or MRX™ for short, is a revolutionary new email management system developed by JPY. Launched this month, MRX™ is the brainchild of Dr John Yardley. Originally developed as a way to manage email for JPY, the innovative approach to the problem proved useful to many other businesses.

Unlike many CRM applications with email bolted on, MRX™ is an email system like no other. It allows business email to be searched, shared and archived, while allowing personal email to be separately segregated. It's unobtrusive and permits users to use the familiar email tools they already use.

In use at JPY for over 2 years now, the last 6 months development effort has been geared towards a full web front end. Now MRX™ can locate any piece of company mail no matter where the user is located. Imagine the beauty of being on a customer site and within a few key strokes, being able to locate any mail to or from the customer - no matter who sent it.

If you are an existing JPY customer, you can quickly see for yourself how powerful MRX™ is by logging in and browsing all the mail between your company and JPY. If you wish to do this, then please mail sales@jpy.com for a password using the mail address that you use on normal communications with us.

The benefits are too numerous to mention here, so why not take a look at the new MRX™ website.

Email survey - Win a silver (Jubilee) iPod Shuffle

With all this MRX excitement, we're email obsessed at the moment. We'd like to know a little bit about how you use email at work. If you would give us five minutes of your time to complete this online survey, you'll be entered in a prize draw. You'll have the chance to win a one of 5 silver (to commemorate our 25 years) iPod Shuffles.

You will find the survey by clicking here.

Winners and the results of the survey will be in the next newsletter.

PresSTORE clean sweep

After PresSTORE 2.2 achieved a rare five star review from Macworld magazine recently, MacUser looked at the latest version 2.3. The result: Mac User concurred and bestowed a five mouse award on PresSTORE. That means the two top Mac mags agree that PresSTORE is the top choice for backup archiving and synchronisation.

The latest 2.3 version of PresSTORE has a number of new features, though the biggest is the ability to use a Windows machine as the host. Previously Windows was fine as a client, but lacked the SCSI drivers needed to act as the backup server. Other improvements include the ability to search images by thumbnail on the Mac version.

Canto updates Cumulus to 7.1

Canto's Digital Asset Management software Cumulus has moved to 7.1, adding new features and solving some issues. The Web Access Client gains some features previously only available to the native client, such as the asset relationship management. Also the layout options have been expanded for both Web and Native clients.

On the back end, the Cumulus Server can now be mirrored for load balancing and backup.

For more information on the upgrade look here.

HELIOS arrives on a different platform

For the first time in its history, HELIOS is available on a non UNIX platform. Now Windows servers can be used to host the publishing solution. This means more people will be able to take advantage of the HELIOS UB power, without needing to be UNIX users.

The HELIOS UB family now available for Windows servers includes the base HELIOS, WebShare UB, ImageServer UB, PDF Handshake UB and PrintPreview UB.

Remote Backup White Paper

We have recently commissioned a white paper investigating the case for Remote Backup as part of any SME's contingency planning. In particular, the paper covers the way in which PresSTORE provides solutions to key data protection issues: the physical vulnerability of on-site backup, recovery speed, reliability, legacy hardware, platform lock-in, and client usability. The author, Richard Dyce, one-time Technical Editor of MacUser, is a computer journalist who regularly contributes to the Mac and PC, and National press.

You can download Richard's white paper from here.

JPY Sponsors Mac Managers' Meeting, San Francisco

JPY will be one of the sponsors for the Mac Managers' meeting to be held before the 2007 Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

The meeting will take place at the Beale Street Bar & Grill (upstairs) on Monday, January 8th at 7:30 PM. The call notice says:

"We've had our event there now every year since 2001, and it is likely we'll keep coming back until they tear the place down and build a skyscraper there (which I've heard is indeed going to happen sometime in the future.) Tony The Bartender will be there pouring his legendary stiff drinks. Beale Street is on (surprise!) Beale Street between Mission and Howard, about five long blocks ENE of Moscone Center. It is a reasonable walk from most of the Expo hotels, or a very reasonable cab ride. (Link to map.) It is the green-roofed small building there in that view. It is the only small building in an area of tall buildings."

John Yardley, MD of JPY, and David Fanning from Tin Drum PR will be at the Mac Managers' Meeting (and at Macworld Expo) and would welcome the opportunity to meet with any customers. You will however, need to register with Mac Managers.
