PresSTORE gets 5 Star salute from Macworld
The September issue of Macworld carries a review of PresSTORE by Richard Dyce. While short, it is overwhelmingly positive and heaps praise on PresSTORE's ease of use and powerful features. Not only did PresSTORE get five stars, in the pros and cons section, Richard failed to find any cons. There is no higher endorsement than that!
What is more, a new version of PresSTORE is due to be released soon, so it will have even more functionality than the version reviewed.
Macworld reviews are not currently available on-line on the Macworld website, so you read the review in the printed magazine or view it here.
The truth about backup
In July, JPY embarked on an investigation into the backup habits of the nation. The good news is, more people than we imagined actually do back things up. The bad news is, if you have a Mac or a Linux box on your network, the likelihood of getting all your data backed up plummets.
Also, the methods of securing data vary whether you use a Mac or a PC. Mac people are often forced to go the DIY route, making backup copies to CD or DVD manually. PC people tend to let the Systems Administrators take care of things, and are automatically secured. Almost half PC users reported that 100 percent of the machines on the network are backed up. In mixed platform environments, users reported just 25 percent success at backing up 100 percent of the network.
Of course at JPY, we understand why the Mac and Linux equation works the way it does. There are precious few products that really "understand" professional backup solutions for all platforms. Fortunately Archiware PresSTORE is just such a product. Treating all platforms with the same respect and capabilities, PresSTORE automates network backup regardless of your OS.
The survey showed lots of examples of machines being left out in the cold. Windows based archive and backup rarely does as good a job for Mac of Unix users. Hence the tendency for ad hoc solutions like CDs.
One positive note about the non-Windows users, they are a lot more independent than the PC people. Almost 60 per cent of PC users would require the help of the IT staff to retrieve lost work. In contrast, only 14 percent of Mac users would bother the IT department, with a whopping 82 percent would be able to sort the problem out themselves.
If your backup is failing the less mainstream platforms, JPY would be happy to demonstrate the power and versatility of Archiware PresSTORE.
Mail Robot X to be launched this year
Following our July newsletter when we announced our plans to develop our mail management system, MRX, into a fully commercial product, we have been deluged with requests for our MRX White Paper. It is no surprise that workgroup customers experience the same problems organising their mail as we did. Legal requirements on mail archiving, personified in the US Sarbanes-Oxley act, have added even further impetus.
Work has continued apace and we are planning to launch MRX before the end of this year. We are currently in the process of designing a website specifically for MRX and will announce this shortly. In the meantime, if you have any interest in Mail Management and Archiving (especially in a Macintosh environment), then please contact development@jpy.com.
(Note that this newsletter was prepared and distributed using MRX.)
Canto Cumulus 7 launches
July 13th saw the launch of Cumulus 7, Canto's leading Digital Asset Management software. New features include the ability to manage relationships between assets, so that images referenced in page layout documents are linked to them. Also new are automation features to enhance workflows with increased asset control, allowing faster production and more efficient collaboration.
Cumulus is also a Universal Binary now, so it will run natively in OS X on Intel powered Macs. For more details or a demo contact Kevan Hamman.
We are planning to run a free seminar in central London in October or November covering Cumulus 7. The final venue and date are still to be decided, but if this is of interest, please Pre-Register Now. This will not commit you, but it will help us with the planning of this event.
PresSTORE Seminar success
July 20th saw JPY hosting a seminar on data management with our partner, Archiware. Josef Doods, Archiware's President, spoke at the event and explained the benefits of PresSTORE 2, and the latest features. The event was attended by IT professionals keen to learn strategies for managing data-backup in cross platform environments. The crowd included representatives from Apple, alongside consultants and IS managers.
Josef also gave a sneak preview of some of the new features of the imminent update to PresSTORE, version 2.3.
Added support for driving SCSI devices like tape drive and jukeboxes on the Windows platform.
Added QuickTime still-image, film and audio previews for the archive module. This is currently only supported on the Macintosh platform.
As soon as the new PresSTORE version is released, full details will be published on the JPY website
If you missed out on the seminar and would like to know more about how PresSTORE can solve your data security problems why not call us on +44-208-390-8487 for a demo.
HELIOS "Universal" Unbreakable
HELIOS has released its server solutions for Intel Macs. Designed to take advantage of the latest Apple quad-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro machines, HELIOS UB will run faster than ever.
Ron Okamoto, Apple's Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations commented,
"We're delighted HELIOS has taken advantage of the innovative architecture and blazing speed of the Mac Pro and Xserve to deliver powerful server solutions."
We will soon be shipping the CD022 update to all our HELIOS customers in support.
Survey Prize winner
Heta Dobrowolski, a designer at Vivienne Westwood was the lucky winner of our survey prize draw. John Yardley presented Heta with a 60GB black iPod. Heta is a big music fan and this is her first iPod. Look out for other prize draws and competitions in forthcoming newsletters.
JPY makes national press
In a feature appearing in the technology section of the Guardian newspaper on 7th September 2006, JPY was the focus of attention. As part of the Guardian's "Free Our Data" campaign, the story was used to highlight business sector company's experiences with government department. For those of you that missed the article, you can find it in the Technology Guardian.
Consultancy
Many customers are unaware that a high proportion of JPY's business is in direct specialist IT consultancy to customers in the publishing industry. Companies often have complex networks and workflow requirements, and in a world dominated by PC/Windows, it is often difficult for customers to get expert consultancy in the areas of pre-press, PDF workflow, Unix/Linux and Mac OS X, etc - areas in which JPY specialises. Typical consultancy tasks include:
Design of PDF workflows
Help in bringing "repro" in-house
Analysing and designing networks
Setting up secure remote access to digital assets
Product installation and training
In view of the fact that consultancy costs can vary so much - for example, remote log-in is much cheaper than an overseas site visit - we have recently restructured our consultancy charges to reflect this. More details can be found in the consultancy section of our website.
