Backup, Archive, Synchronise – whats the difference, when should I use them?

What is it?:Backup takes a copy of your important files – usually at a fixed interval, say every day. You can recover your files to their state at the time of backup.
Insures against: Storage failure and accidental deletion or modification of files.
Advantages: Fast (especially when backing-up to disk), it can be done during periods of low usage.
Disadvantages: Not real-time, only as up-to-date as last backup.

What is it?: Like Backup, Archive takes a copy of your important files – usually at a fixed interval, say every day. However, with Archive can recover your files to their state to almost any time in the past.
Insures against: Storage failure and both accidental and deliberate deletion or modification of files.
Advantages: You can clear your working storage of old projects know you can recover them at any time.
Disadvantages: Recovery generally takes longer than with backup. Requires main server to be running.

What is it?: Synchronise maintains a mirror image of your server and workstation storage. It is designed for disaster recovery situations where downtime and loss of data must be a minimum. It is excellent for maintaining remote-site copies.
Insures against: Storage and system failure.
Advantages: Always up-to-date. Ideal for protecting data on user workstations.
Disadvantages: Requires duplicate systems and high-speed connectivity.
