Ski Club of Great Britain

Founded in 1903, the Ski Club of Great Britain is the UK's leading snowsports club.  It is a not-for-profit organisation aimed at making snowsports cheaper and more accessible. Membership is open to all skiers and snowboarders.

Ski Club currently has 33,500 members worldwide with Ski Club Leaders across 34 ski resorts. The Ski Club is seen as a source of information for skiers and snowboarders; reporting snow conditions, piste depths and lift operations for 252 ski resorts worldwide. They also provide snow forecasts, ski resort webcams, historical snow data updated daily and a holiday planning service for their members.

skiclub_casestudy_1Members benefit from a wide range of services, as well as the unique ski 'Leading' service. Other benefits include premium snow and weather reports, over 2000 discounts, access to all Ski Club events and special rate tickets for UK ski shows. The Club also offers specialist skiing with other members on the Ski Club's Freshtracks holidays and extensive information through the UK's leading snowsports magazine Ski+board and through a dedicated information team.

When Paul White, current ICT Manager of The Ski Club of Great Britain joined the company, they were still using an old "flat" file database system. Paul said:

"If the data you are dealing with is more complex, it can make managing a flat-file database extremely tedious and difficult as well as this searching, sorting, and other simple activities can take a very long time and use a great deal of memory and other system resources. It also means data was stored in different locations. We needed to centralise our data and create one unique storage point that everyone could access the information from."

That was when Ski Club put the software redevelopment work out to contract and, following a successful bid,  JVolution - which was acquired by JPY in October 2009 - was appointed to build the new client-server system. Ski Club's main objective was to provide centralised resources. The new client server system developed by JVolution was named Summit and, over the course of two years, all of The Ski Club's old data was migrated to the new system. This has continued with incremental new development over the last ten years. The JPY team now handle all of The Ski Clubs back-end systems. Paul White says that the system has now become the "cornerstone of the company". Paul continues:

"As a business, the more you know about your customers, the better. Therefore, the gathering, storing and processing of information using a client server system can give you a distinct advantage. The client server system enables The Ski Club to manage our member database, Leader information and holidays. It deals with Customer Relationship Management by allowing The Ski Club to organise, automate, and synchronise Customer information, which in turn helps to increase customer satisfaction, loyalty, and retention."

skiclub_casestudy_2Some of the benefits the Ski Club has seen over the years include the reduction in the amount of time spent managing data; the ability to analyse data in a variety of ways; a more disciplined approach to data management so that any element can be upgraded when needed so new technology can be easily integrated into the system as well as helping improve the quality and consistency of information. Sharing of this data resource is now much easier because the database is in one location and all users can share access to the same database instead of each user having their own copy. Paul concludes:

"We sell ski report data to national newspapers and other companies. This is organised through the Client Server System. The system has streamlined the business and enabled us to move data between the web and the database. It is secure because it is centralised and there is the added benefit of having a bespoke software solution which allows us to make vital changes that match our business requirements and not the other way around. All in all, JPY's previous and ongoing involvement with the design and development of the Ski Club's website has greatly improved all aspects of our business."
