HELIOS CD018 Update Installer

WelcThis is a guide to installing updates for the HELIOS products distributed on CD018. I will go through the process of updating a product that has had no updates installed. The screen grabs are taken from an OSX 10.2 machine although the procedure is much the same for the other platforms.

It is particularly important to appreciate that the update installed program (hupd) that ships on CD018 requires updating before any other updates can be installed. The first batch of updates released from HELIOS contained a new version of the update installer that has to be installed before any of the other updates can be installed. Therefore the procedure for updating the products requires the initial 'update installer' to be installed, then the updater program has to be quit and relaunched before the installation of the remaining updates can commence. If you think this sounds a little complicated then you should find the instructions below will guide you through the process without too much trouble!

1. Downloading the updates

There are two methods of downloading the updates you need. First it is possible to download them directly from within the update installer application. Second, you can download a tar file from the HELIOS web site or contact JPY Support and get it sent to you. This page assumes you have a tar file containing the updates to hand.

This screen grab shows the tar file has been placed in a folder on the desktop under Mac OS X.

Once you have the tar file on a local disk, use this the tar command as shown here to extract the updates from the tar file.

Then change to the '/usr/local/helios/bin' directory where the update installer is located and run it by typing './hupd'.

This will take you to the menu screen of the update installer. Use the arrow keys to navigate the menus and the enter key to make selections. The tab key moves between fields in later screens. For full documentation of the update installer, check out the HELIOS Base manual.

First we need to specify the location of the updates that we extracted from the tar file. Select Setup and then General to show the following screen.

Here you should be able to leave the 'Install Path' set to the default installation directory providing you didn't specify anything different when you installed the products. You will need to change the 'Update search path' to the directory where you have put the updates. In this OSX example, they are located in my User folder, on the desktop in a folder called 'helios_updates'. Having made these changes use tab and arrow keys and enter to press the OK button.

Now, back at the menu screen, navigate up to 'Express Update' and select using enter.

Because of a bug in the original version of the update installer, you will see the above error. You will now need to press the Enter key followed by the Escape key and repeat a few times to move onto the next screen. Otherwise ignore the error message displayed - it's a symptom of the bug in the update installer that is fixed by the patch you are about to install.

This is indicating that the updates you have are being scanned.

Click (select with enter) the OK button here.

Now you are informed that there is a new update installer in the selected updates. Select 'Yes' to install it.

Now your update installer is updated! However, not all updates are installed yet, we have to quite the update installer and relaunch it and go through the same procedure again to install the remaining updates. Next we quit, and return back to the command line where we launch the update installer again. Note that the version number of the update installer as displayed in the top right-hand corner of the window changes at this point to indicate the update has been installed.

Now go back to the part above where we just launched the update installer and work through the steps exactly as you did earlier. When you have got to the stage where the updates have successfull been installed, from the main menu, select 'list updates' to see a list of installed updates. The following two screen grabs show the updates listed as 'A' for applied. This is what you should see after the update procedure has been successful.

Now you can quit the update installer.

The HELIOS services will require a restart to start running the updated software.

If you are in doubt as to whether the updates are installed properly, connect to your server using EtherShare Admin, and select Versions from the Lists menu. You can email this to support@jpy.com for inspection!
